Life-saving sprinklers face code test in South Carolina

The good news is that a misguided attempt to reverse last year's hard-fought national building code mandate for fire sprinklers in new residential construction has gone down to overwhelming defeat. It's safe to say that when the committee and floor votes were taken late last month, no one in the Baltimore, Md., audience of several thousand was more elated than S.C.'s State Fire Marshal John Reich. A national perspective on the cost of installing residential fire sprinklers is examined in a new report Home Fire Sprinkler Cost Assessment (PDF, 634 KB), released by the Fire Protection Research Foundation, an affiliate of the National Fire Protection Association. According to the report, the cost of installing sprinkler systems to the home builder averaged $1.61 per sprinklered square foot. Sprinklered square feet is the total area of spaces with sprinklers. More

Elderly residents in Richmond, Va., are counting their blessings. They survived after their apartment building catches fire. Firefighters say a resident on the 3rd floor was cooking and left a pot on the stove. That pot is what caught fire. Firefighters say it was that sprinkler system that prevented this fire from turning deadly. More

Council puts off City Hall sprinkler design

Citing budget restraints, San Diego City Council members sidelined a $5 million project to install legally mandated fire sprinklers at City Hall. The city adopted a law in 1986 that requires the installation of fire sprinklers in all high-rise buildings. The 14-story City Hall, which is partially equipped with sprinklers, is the only building out of compliance. More

High-rise fire: Resident angry that residential units lacked sprinklers

Chicago requires a sprinkler system for residential high-rises built after 1975. Resident Maureen Marley's building, at 260 E. Chestnut St. in the Gold Coast neighborhood, was constructed in the mid-1960s. In January 2002, a woman who lived down the hallway from Marley died after discarded smoking materials caught fire in her 14th-floor unit. Eleven others were injured in the blaze, including eight firefighters. The tragedy revived criticism of city building codes by local fire experts. Marley joined their cause, appealing to both her condominium board and city officials to retrofit her building for sprinklers. More

Sprinkler credited for saving Tennessee apartment
